A Study Concerning about Making out Maps of Lost Villages of Post World War II in Japan and the Analysis abaut Periods and Main Causes of Disappearance

This paper reports the number and the location of lost villages in Japan by referring to the editions of maps in some stages. It proved to be that about 2912 of villages were lost in these areas after World War II.It is guessed that in the period of 1945-1965, 1411 villages were lost and in 1965-1985, 1501 villages.575 villages (20%) were lost by the reason of dam construction and other facilities and 2333 villages (80%) were lost because of inconvenience of daily life etc.From the investigation to local governments in 16 prefectures (concerning about non-dam construction case) 73% of lost villages were in scale of smaller than 10 households and mostly they were living by way of making charcoal or forestry.Main causes of disappearance were 'far distance to the employment location' (25%), 'heavy snow fall' (21%) , 'hardness of getting married'(8%), 'natural disaster (8%)' etc.The investigation to the local government is to be continued and will be extended to all of Japan.
