项目摘要

二、三の西洋の博物館に所蔵された繊維文化財の天然繊維、主として絹製品について時代を遡って中性までの資料について走査電子顕微鏡による比較観察を行ない、劣化の状況の差を明かにすることができた。成果は1994年9月にカナダのオタワで開催されたIIC(国際保存科学会議)で発表し、高い評価を得た。エジプトのナイル川中流にあるアコリス遺跡より出土した繊維品は、過去数年に渉る研究の結果、使用染料の同定ができた。赤色はいずれも茜であり、紫の場合にもインジゴと茜の重ね染めであった。茜の品種はその織物の製作地推定に手掛かりとなるが、高速液体クロマトグラフィー/質量分析法による分析結果から西洋茜と判明した。以前に素材である絹繊維の走査電子顕微鏡による観察を行なった結果と総合して推定すると、アコリス出土品は繊維素材が中近東経由でもたらされ、アコリス付近などナイル近辺で染色されたものと考えられる。考古学者は紫色の原料として、貝紫の可能性を指摘していたが、申請者等が調査した範囲内ではすべてインジゴと茜の重ね染めである。黄色は西洋で常用されているウエルドであり、緑色はインジゴとウエルドの重ね染めである。青はインジゴであるが採取した植物の品種は不明である。黒色はインジゴと未同定の染料との重ね染めである。成果は古代学協会から「AKORIS」と題して刊行さえれた書物の中に報告されている。
