本研究は、社会ドミナンス志向を測定するための尺度を作成するとともに、社会ドミナンス志向が政治的保守主義の様々な側面との間にどのような関連性を示すかについて検討することを目的とした。まず、社会ドミナンス志向尺度の作成に関しては、Sidanius(1989)の原尺度をもとに一部新たな項目を加えて整理した予備尺度を用意し、大学生を対象として質問紙調査を行った。その結果、社会ドミナンス志向尺度は顕著な一次元性を示し、α係数も。885という高い値が得られた。直接oblinin法による斜交回転結果、社会ドミナンス志向は社会的不平等、貧富の格差および自助努力を信奉する態度群から成り立っていることが示唆された。次に政治的保守主義尺度の整備については、Harada(1994)で使用した尺度項目に最近の政治動向を反映した新たな項目を収集したものを加えて大学生172名に質問紙調査を実施した。因子分析の結果得られた政治的保守主義の構造は基本的にはHarada(1994)と同一であり、軍国主義、資本主義、復古主義、新自由主義、政治参加の制限、中央集権、現体制維持などの12の因子から成り立つことが示唆された。さらに社会ドミナンス志向と政治的保守主義の各次元との関連性については、社会ドミナンス志向は政治的保守主義のうちで復古主義、新自由主義、中央集権、現体制維持との間に正の有意な相関を持つことが明らかにされた。また、社会ドミナンス志向の強い者ほど自らの政治的態度が空虚で、不安定であると認知していることも示唆された。今後は、すでに入手済みの米国人大学生のデータとあわせて比較研究を行うとともに、社会ドミナンス志向が政治的保守主義のどの次元を説明するのかについて早急に検討を行う予定である。
