C4 will develop methods that allow to predict particle behaviour with the same resolution but at a much smaller computational cost than the single particle simulations used today. More efficient single particle models are a crucial prerequisite for establishing large-scale DEM/CFD simulation methods for routine use. The specific goal of the present project is to accelerate spatially and temporally resolved single particle models by means of model reduction of the associated partial differential equations for diffusive and reactive processes. C4 ultimately provides a systematic method for turning these high resolution descriptions into systems of low-dimensional ordinary differential equations. Some of the main challenges are the multiphysics character of the processes (e.g. reaction, diffusion, multiphase thermodynamics) and spatially and temporally varying boundary conditions at the particle surface, which require tailor-made methods and implementations.
