Research on Alliteration of Piers Plowman : The A-Text and their Digital Diplomatic Texts of All 20 Manuscripts

It is intended in this research to characterize alliteration of Langland's Piers Plowman: The A-Version through consulting all 20 manuscripts of the poem. I have visited several libraries in order to consult most of the PPLA manuscripts in U.S.A. and UK and collected color images from those libraries. I produced a significant set of their digital images in CDs from the photos. I tried to reproduce deplomatic texts through techniques of information science called 'Letter Recognition' and computer programs. The former method does not provide us a promising result at this stage but we can continue this research in the Senshu University Project "The Development of the Anglo-Saxon Language and Linguistic Universals". I have completed all the diplomatic texts through computer programs using Kane's text and his extremely clarified notes in his edition (1960). This shows my enterprise has been quite successful. Digital images of the PPLA manuscripts and their digital diplomatic texts have become an excellent database. This database will be accessible from all over the world when I obtain permissions from the libraries. This shows a great possibility of providing in future all the Langlandian scholars a preferable chance to consult the PPLA manuscripts in their own rooms.
