Catalysis science relies on the exact characterization of catalytic systems on the atomic level. X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy yields structural information such as type, number and geometric arrangement of atoms around a given one and as well information about electronic structure such as the oxidation state. The method is not depending on the crystalline state of the sample (as it is the case for X-ray diffraction techniques), rather it is useful for non-crystalline, samples and can be applied to amorphous solids and clusters or nano materials of very small particle size, which is essential for many scientific problems. In addition, X-ray spectroscopy is applicable for in-situ and in-operando studies of catalytic systems under reaction conditions, which is of importance for mechanistic studies and the elucidation of aging processes. Such kind of experiments are typically run at large scale research facilities with synchrotron radiation However, capacities are quite restricted at such beam lines and time scales of application and admission are long. An in-house X-ray spectrometer would greatly enhance the efficiency and access to such large scale facilities by doing preliminary measurements and detailed planning of experimental sessions, and as well it would enable many projects for using X-ray spectroscopy in a routine fashion.
