项目摘要

令和4年4月より、本研究課題の申請および交付内定時には全く想定していなかった、日本英文学会事務局の業務を担当することになった。申請当初、本研究課題のエフォートは15%としていたが、校務のみならず、年間を通して非常に業務量の多い事務局の仕事が加わったため、研究時間の確保が困難になったことに加え、令和4年7月末から8月中旬にかけて、自身と家族の新型コロナウイルス感染症の罹患および感染拡大による学童保育所や保育所の長期閉鎖もあいまって、学休期にも研究時間の捻出が難しい状況であった。このような事情により、昨年度の実施状況報告書に記載した計画どおりに、ジェイン・オースティンの『エマ』（1815）についての論考を論文にまとめて提出することができず、またその他の作家・作品についても、口頭発表や論文として研究成果をまとめ発信できるほどには研究を進めることができなかった。しかしながら、少しでも研究課題を遂行すべく、令和4年度は出講との兼ね合いでジョージ・エリオットに焦点を絞り、テクストの精読を行った。具体的には、エリオットの自伝的要素が強いとされる小説『フロス河畔の水車場』（1860）を取り上げ、叙事詩と小説のジャンル的、形式的特質や差異という点から小説のテーマと構造・形式を考察しながら、テクストの整理・分析を進めた。令和4年度は、依然として新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響が続いていたことにより、所属する大半の学会の年次大会がオンライン開催となったため、本研究課題遂行にあたり大いに参考になる他の研究者の口頭発表を拝聴できる機会が通常よりもかえって多くなり、「小説」というジャンルやジョージ・エリオットの「小説」の特徴などについて新しい視座を得ることができ、自身のテクスト分析作業に活かすことができたのは大きな収穫であった。
