Vulnerability and Maneuverability of Female Headed Households in Communities of Southeast Tanzania

There is a substantive presence of female headed households (FHH), especially divorced mothers, and single mothers in matrilineal southeast Tanzania. Vulnerability and maneuverability of and their inclusion within the community have been evaluated through questionnaire and life history interviews. More FHH, in comparison to male headed households, tend to lack food, however, explicit difference in income was not seen. Young unmarried and/or divorced women cope by doing business, whereas widowed women can rely on others (though difference was seen between individuals). From a historical perspective, there was a case of a woman who decided not to marry the father of a child after he failed to prove his ability to work hard through bride labor when they lived matri-locally in the past, whereas with patrilineal influence today, there are many cases of single mothers based on the men's decision not to marry.
