本研究では、美術館の最も長時間の利用者である学芸員を含む美術館職員に目を向け、収蔵庫や事務室などの非公開エリアの研究を行うことで美術館の建築計画の一助となることを目的としている。調査協力の得られた美術館に実地調査とヒアリング調査を行った。文献やホームページにより美術館の平面図を作成し、実地調査とヒアリング調査により非公開エリアの室名の把握を行った。また、ヒアリング調査により、美術館職員のみが活動することができる範囲を把握した。学芸員、総務員、監視員、警備員の４つの系統で美術館職員をわけ、各職員が頻繁に利用する諸室について調査を行った。そして、実地調査を行い、各諸室の階高、室面積、仕上げ材の調査を行った。上記より、各室の平面図を作成し、室名や仕上げ材などの条件をもとに、ヒアリング調査を行い、各所室の利用方法や問題点、秀逸点の抽出を行い、以下の結果を得られた。学芸員と総務員が同じ室を用いている場合もあれば、学芸員と総務員が別の室を利用している場合もあると言う結果が得られた。また、監視員の休憩スペースが計画されていない館では、休憩室が１つの室に確定されず、貸しギャラリーや会議室など各日異なる室を利用しているため、監視員への周知や、利用動線の確保が難しいという結果が得られた。また、収蔵品や展示品の保管場所不足、２次資料の保管場所がないことなどの問題点を抽出した。今後は、美術館で用いる収蔵品や備品などがどのように利用され、どのような場所に保管される必要があるのかを調査していく必要がある。引き続き実地調査とヒアリング調査を行いそれらの問題の解決方法を見出していく。
