本研究の問いは「農作業への関わりが精神的健康に及ぼす影響、認知症発症・進行予防につながるか」であり、新潟十日町市の非要介護高齢者において、①横断調査から農作業従事者・非従事者間で精神的機能に差があるか検証すること、②追跡調査から精神的機能の低下に農作業が緩和要因となるか検証することを目的としている。本研究は、新潟県十日町市に住む65-84歳の非要介護高齢者を対象とし、年齢・居住環境（市街地あるいは農村部）により層別ランダムサンプリングした前向きコホート研究であるNeuron to Environmental Impact across Generations Study（NEIGE研究）をもとに行っており、2017年にベースライン調査、2021-2022年に追跡調査を終えた。本研究の初年度となる2022年度は、2017年ベースライン調査結果の整理の後に、対象者を農作業従事群・非従事群に分け、両群の背景要因（年齢、性別、既往歴、教育歴、家族構成、経済状況、喫煙、飲酒、活動量など）を比較した。また、精神的機能（認知機能、うつ、不安、孤独感、主観的健康度など）をアウトカムとして分析を行い、一定時間以上の農作業従事群ではうつ傾向や認知機能低下、孤独感が低く、主観的健康度が高いことを確認している。さらに、年度末にはNEIGE研究者と十日町市役所地域ケア推進課との意見交換会が行われ、研究内容に関しての情報の共有と議論を行った。農作業の従事時間や活動内容の調査など、より具体的で現場に即した研究が切望された。農作業の種類、環境・規模、時期・頻度・時間などの聴取や、農業組合や十日町市役所への定期的な訪問調査を検討している。
