本研究は、「注意の瞬き attentional blink」現象を、行動実験並びに視覚野を対象とした自称関連脳電位（ERP）測定を用いて解明することを目的とした。注意の瞬きとは、ひとつの対象を認識した後、数百ミリ秒に渡り、続いて提示される対象の認知が困難になるという現象である。最近の知見によれば、「注意の瞬き」は、外界の対象（object）を認識するために最低限必要な認知メカニズムを反映したものであり、我々が世界を分節する時間的基礎ユニット‐エピソード‐の存在を示唆していると言う。 この「エピソード」を通じてのみ、我々は外界からの膨大な入力の中から、現行の目的に合致する対象を選択的に切り取り、記憶できると考えられている。本年度は研究計画全体を遂行するための研究設備の設立と、注意の瞬き成立の必要条件の検討に関する予備実験を行った。設備設立に関しては、現在世界基準として使用されているERP解析用フリーソフトウェアERPLABを導入するため、その要件となるMATLABの導入を行った。予備実験としては、偶発的注意捕捉パラダイムを応用し、捕捉の程度を参加者内で段階的に操作した場合に、注意の瞬きの発生に変化が生じるかどうかを検討した。結果、注意捕捉が強い場合（先行刺激の色も文字カテゴリーも一致）で、注意捕捉が弱い場合（色も文字カテゴリーも不一致）と比べて強い注意の瞬きが生じることが確認できた。この結果を得たことで、今後ERP実験を行って、この偶発的注意捕捉の強さと注意の瞬きの程度の間にどのような関係が存在するかを検証することが可能となった。
