本年度の研究第一に、オウィディウス『変身物語』がいかなる性質の叙事詩であるかについて考察を進めた。具体的には、個々の物語分析を進めると共に、作品全体の統一的な主題についての考察をおこなった。『変身物語』は、全体を大きく3つの部分に分けることができる。さらにそのなかに数行から数百行に及ぶ多様な物語群が含まれる。本研究の第一の論点は、個々の物語の解釈にある。それぞれ独立した物語がどのような意味を持つのかを重視しながら、その意味の集合体として、統一的主題を見出すことを試みている。本年度の研究においては、作品が世界の始まりから同時代にいたる歴史叙事詩としての性質を持つことに着目し、全3部の構成を確認しながら、作品の統一性に一定の理解を提示することができた。この成果は、博士論文のなかで詳述する予定である。また、個々の物語理解の成果の一端として、「ナルキッソスとエーコーの物語」に新たな解釈の提示した。第二に、『変身物語』が神話を集めた物語集であることに着目し、当時の社会における神話および宗教の意義について分析をおこなった。当時のローマは、共和政から帝政への過渡期にあり、内乱の時代が終焉を迎え、大帝国を形成した時期であった。そのような時代背景の中で、既存の宗教、すなわち神話を基礎とする伝統的神々への信仰が、混沌のなかで薄れていく。『変身物語』はそのような時代背景を意識しながら、叙事詩として神話物語集を作ったのではないかと仮定している。この仮定の裏づけとして、当時の社会背景、宗教的な背景を分析した。そのなかで、アウグストゥスの宗教改革、当時の民間信仰、『変身物語』の共通点を見出した。とりわけアポロン信仰、イシス信仰、ミトラ教などとの共通点は重要な要素として位置づけられる。またこのことは、ローマでの実地調査のなかで、一端を確認することができた。
