Museum sound collections to help people hear natural and environmental sounds: collecting, conservation and sustainable use

For the Collection of Nature Sound and Sound Environment of Natural History Museum and Institute, Chiba, to be in sustainable use, the management and utilization system for bioacoustics collection database was constructed. Over 60,000 sound files were registered with detailed information in easy access.By analyzing the impression of participants in the Project for Strength of Hearing in the Ecology Park, the Collection appears the important resources for education, science and technology.As a case study to realize possibilities of the Collection, local citizens and staff studied local sound environment together at Sawara District to compare before and after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and individually at 4 other locations in 2012-13. In 2013 Projects Exhibition 'Soundscape', the outcome was presented in the Local Sound Map System with the elaborate soundscape reproduction applying Panorama Acoustic Space to prove the significance of the Collection for further discussion.
