英文摘要
We demonstrate optical characteristics of polymeric linear polarizers produced from oriented two-component amorphous polymer blends. Refractive index of dispersed phase of blend is closely to ordinary refractive index of birefringent continuous phase, while refractive index mismatch is simultaneously generated in the perpendicular direction. Films are therefore transparent or opaque depending on the polarization direction of the incident light. However, both transmittance and polarizing efficiency measured by UV-VIS spectra depends on incident wavelength, which is ascribed to wavelength dependence of light scattering by small particles. To eliminate this character, we tried to increase length of dispersed phase to drawing direction. By changing dispersed phase contents, we could control particle (dispersed phase) size to the perpendicular direction, but could not increase particle size to the drawing direction. So we introduce aligned fibers in polymer matrix instead of dispersed phase, … More which increase particle size to the refractive index mismatch direction. Both transmittance and polarizing efficiency were drastically improved. It was found that the sum of the light intensities in the forward and backward direction approaches unity, which indicates that light losses due to, for instance, absorption are virtually eliminated. In the opaque state, a large portion of the incident light (80 %) is scattered in the backward direction, whereas in the transparent state 90 % of the incident light is transmitted in the forward direction. This feature is especially useful in devices that are constructed to recycle light and that are designed to enhance the efficiency to produce polarized light from natural light.Apart from a high efficiency to produce linearly polarized light, the polarizers possess a variety of other potential advantages. In comparison to dichroic polarizers, an enhanced temperature and humidity resistance and an enhanced light stability are expected, which are useful properties in, for instance, projection displays, projection screens, and displays in automotive dashboards.
