A Bibliographical Study of Yomihon Publishing and Circulation in the Nineteenth Century

The current aim of our research is the completion of a provisional version of the first 'Chronology and Checklist of Yomihon Publishing'. The focus of our work for the current year has been a renewed effort to survey collections to supplement the data we already collected and put into order last year as well as a rethinking of this year's survey plan. After arranging a detailed schedule for this year's bibliographical fieldwork, we proceeded to a discussion of methodology for recording bibliographical data. The results of this methodological discussion were to reduce the number of bibliographic fields per entry from what we had planned for so-called 'full length' yomihon and to continue to next year the problem of recording the details of variant printings.From last year, we continued our survey of private collections and the gathering of necessary photo duplications of materials from the National Diet Library's collection. In particular, deserving of special mention are our survey's o … More f the manuscript and other materials of Suzuki Tokuzo Collection at the Printing Museum and the collection of materials relating to Kyokutei Bakin's Hakkenden at the Tateyama City Museum in which we identified a complete first edition of a book of excerpts of the Hakkenden. In addition, we made two trips to the Hiroshima University Library in August and November to survey that library's important collection of 250 yomihon which we had been unable to survey previously and completed the bibliographical work and taking of digital images for this collection. As there were items in this collection which we had not found elsewhere, these trips were particularly valuable. This year's research produced some important new information and while we are still a long way from being able to produce an authoritative checklist of yomihon, we have assembled a provisional 'Chronology and Checklist of Yomihon Publishing'.Finally, as the important task of studying variant texts remains, we plan on extending the present study and have applied for additional funding based on a long term research prospectus.
