项目摘要

Introduction : The purpose of this study is to clarify the relation between the nurse manager's perceptions of elderly people and the institutional care provided at geriatric intermediate care facilities.Method : Qualitative descriptive design was used to understand and describe the perceptions of the elderly and the care policies of nurse managers. A semistructured interview was conducted, and participant's perceptions of the elderly and the care policies at the care facilities were extracted and analyzed qualitatively. Results : The participants were six nurse managers who were associated with geriatric intermediate care facilities. Their perceptions of elderly people were various, rich and maturative. These are related to seven factors as follow : "existence of an old person nearby during their childhood", "experiences of caring for an old family member", "impressive events by the elderly at the care facilities", "learning about elderly person from their fellow workers", "learning about the elderly through workshops", "feeling own aging", and "local characteristics in the area around the facilities". Nurse managers took care of old residents relying on her care policies for the elderly. The policies are : "to support the needs of an elderly person as much as possible", "to value the support given to the elderly in their daily lives", and "to make facilities comfortable enough for old people to relax". Nurse managers were able to display the leadership because of having confidence hi the care of the elderly. This confidence consist of the following elements : "their perceptions of the elderly", "manager's opportunities for training and study", "their long-term vision for elderly care and welfare", "availability of a human network", and "devotion to their work".
