Life-style related diseases are risk factors for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. Various health programs on diet and exercise have been tried for the prevention. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of resistance training on endothelial function of middle and elder persons. The present study was conducted as a randomized intervention study where resistance training was done for three months on the intervention group with 45 subjects. For the control group with 41 persons, health guidance based on health checkup was made. Body weight and west circumstance were moderately reduced in the intervention group, while they were slightly or little changed in the control group. Blood lipid and sugar levels were decreased in the intervention group, whereas they were not changed in the control groups. Acute inflammatory reactive proteins such as hs-CRP and plasma fibrinogen reduced in the intervention group more definitely than in the control groups. Von Willebrand factor, as an indicator of endothelial function, increased in both groups. The present study suggested that resistance training may improve inflammatory reaction related to atherosclerosis, which were represented by a reduction of hs-CRP and plasma fibrinogen However, von Willebrand factor need to be further investigated with respect to its appropriate indicator of endothelial function. NO measurement may be the alternative.
