高齢化社会を迎えたわが国において、同年齢にもかかわらず、老化の進行に生理的多型性が存在することは明らかであるが、その成因に関しては明らかにされていない。現在のところ我が国では高齢者の老化の進行度を示す指標は老研式老化指標のように日常・社会的活動を点数化して得られるもので、客観的に個人の生理的な老化を示す指標はない。米国では老化度の指標として提唱されているアロスタティック・ロード(恒常性維持付加度)により老化度の計測が試みられている。本研究では高齢者の老化度を示す指標として我が国ではこれまでに使用されていないアロスタティックロードを、老化度の指標として有効であるか、(特にアロスタティックロードの決定に必要な10の身体的・生理的計測値が日本人の老化の進行度を計る指標として適当か否か)検討し、適当であるとされた場合、実際にわが国における老化研究の企画を行うことを目的とした。研究代表者は共同研究者である曽根、原田と共に平成17年8月末に渡米し、オハイオ州立大学人類学教室Crews教授とアロスタティックロード指標の我が国における適用に関して検討を行った。またわが国における生理人類学の研究者や、オーストラリア国立大学アッテンボロー博士(人類学)らと検討を重ねた結果、アロスタティックロード指標の我が国における適用が可能であるという仮説を導き、長年、研究代表者が町の健康づくり事業に参画してきた長崎県西海市大島町在住者を対象とし、アロスタティックロード指標の測定を行う計画を作成した。その結果、西海市役所担当者と数回のミーティングを行い、本研究を行う確約を得た。
