重点領域研究「先史モンゴロイド」では、地球上の大陸の地形、民族、言語、植生、各種の遺跡の分布図など種々の分野の地理データが多量に収集される。それらを効率よく蓄積、検索するだけでなく、種々の分野の地理データを総合的に利用して、単一の分野だけでは得られない仮説の形成や検証を可能とするインターフェイスは重要である。本研究では、このような目的に適した地理データベースのプロトタイプを構築すると共に、これらのデータを有機的、総合的に利用することを可能にする知的インターフェイスを開発する。本年度は、主として次の2点について研究を行った。(1)地理データベースのプロトタイプの構築:昨年度までに作成した基本的な機能をもった地理データベースシステムに、他の研究班のメンバーの収集したデータのいくつかを組み込んだ。これを実際に使用した経験から、インターフェイスに関する問題点を検討し、これを改良した。さらに、このようなシステムの操作をキーボードではなく、音声入力によって行うための実験的なシステムを作成した。(2)地理データの効率的な蓄積法:地理データのうち、2次元図形として扱うものを効率よく蓄積するために、画像データの圧縮法について研究した。また、インターフェイスとして重要な要因である地図の描画速度を向上させ、ポータブルな描画システムを作成し、遺伝子データベースと結合した。
