This study was conducted to reveal the effect of environmental factors and microbial relationships on alkaline phosphate activity in natural water.1. Monthly survey on alkaline phosphatase activity, water quality and microbial factors, which had been conducted at Hataokami and Hataoshimo Impoundments located in Kashiba, Nara since 2002, was continued. The fluctuation of alkaline phosphatase activity, as well as water quality and microbial parameters was studied.2. Long-term culture of bacteria was performed to investigate the factor affecting alkaline phosphatase production by bacteria. The result has shown that viable but not culturable state of bacteria is not responsible for the fluctuation of alkaline phosphatase production by bacteria in the aphotic zone.3. Reference materials on alkaline phosphatase, phosphate absorption and accumulation in rivers and lakes were collected.
