An educational system of VATS for residents of general thoracic surgeons by using personal computer

As the location and branching of pulmonary arteries and veins distal to the cardiac sac exhibit great individual differences, data related to these vessels are useful to thoracic surgeons.Methods : We developed freeware with which bronchi and pulmonary arteries and veins can be marked on images from CT (computer tomogram) that have been uploaded to a personal computer. We then established a system by which 3-dimensional (3D) images can be reconstructed and surgery can be simulated using freeware for 3D image analysis.Results : Using a freeware program for 3D image analysis, distributions and branching patterns of bronchus, pulmonary arteries and veins in the hilar region of each patient were ascertained to reconstruct a 3D image, enabling virtual reshaping and cutting of reconstructed bronchi and pulmonary arteries and veins.
