FOR 955: Agents of Cultural Globalisation, 1860-1930

The Research Unit examines the dynamics of cultural exchange processes during the first "boom period" of the history of globalisation around 1900. We especially focus on the agents and mediators of transnational interaction and analyse the ways in which cultural, political and social difference were negotiated. We look at the complex processes of cultural and social change in the context of global entanglements, homogenising tendencies and the construction of differences. The research of this Research Unit links expertise from the areas studies with a global history perspective; it attempts to provide a non-eurocentric contribution to a better understanding of the genealogy of the globalised world.
