In Kagoshima Bay, southern Japan, the pandalid shrimp Plesionika semilaevis (Decapoda, Caridea) is a principle by-catch of small-scale bottom seine fishery. Because the market price of P. semilaevis is low, P. semilaevis is often discarded in the sea. In order to utilize P. semilaevis effectively as a local resource, the present status and problems of this resource were examined by the research methods from the fields of fisheries biology, marine food science and marine social science.Fisheries biology (Ohtomi): The distribution and population structure of P. semilaevis was first studied in Kagoshima Bay. P. semilaevis was the most dominant species by numbers and weight of individuals collected in the current survey. Further, 98% of the individuals of occurred at the deepest part of the central bay, all year round. In Kagoshima Bay, the spawning and hatching grounds of P. semilaevis were estimated to cover the entire areas of its distribution. The reproductive biology of southern rough shrimp Trachysalambria curvirostris was also studied in Kagoshima Bay. As the results, the spawning season was estimated to last from May to November, with a peak during June and July.Marine food science (Shindo): The methodology for softening the external skeleton of P. semilaevis was developed.Marine social science (Sakuma): In this part, effective utilization of local fisheries resources such as P. semilaevis was considered from the viewpoint of branding. An individual bland could be considered as thing equivalent to venture business. Also at Fisheries Cooperatives without the power of building an individual bland, it was built as a local bland by cross-industrial cooperation of an area.
