Sequencing approaches confirm the presence of viral genes, but not of infectious viral particles. As viral particles result from tightly regulated auto-assembly processes yielding precise molecular composition, molecular mass constitutes a specific attribute for their detection. We recently established the proof of concept of virus mass analysis using a nano-electro-mechanical resonators mass spectrometry technology (NEMS-MS). While this method holds great promises, issues of speed, sensitivity, and resolution preclude its widespread application. Featuring advances in micro-acoustics for efficient particle delivery, and opto-mechanical resonators to improve detection yield and mass resolution, the AERONEMS project will address issues in efficiency and consistency of NEMS-MS technology to achieve 10 times faster and 100 times more sensitive characterization of viral particles, opening avenues for applications in virus exposure monitoring and diagnosis of infection.
