项目摘要

「世界単位」と「地域間研究」という二つの概念が定着してきており、この班ではそれをさらに精緻化する作業を進めてきた。前者にかんしては応地が南アジアと乾燥アフリカを、掛谷が湿潤アフリカを、家島がインド洋世界を、松原がトルコ世界を、阿部が東南アジア世界を、それぞれ中心的な守備範囲として進めてきた。これらの共同研究の成果はひとまずは、高谷好一『多文明世界の構図』中公新書、(1997年)として出版された。「地域間研究」の方では、平成6年度の南アジアと中東、平成7年度の中国とアフリカの4つの地域間比較につづいて、今年度は2つの研究会が持たれた。ひとつはヨーロッパとの比較であり、今ひとつは日本との比較であった。ヨーロッパとの比較は「地域間研究;東南アジアとヨーロッパ」として平成8年9月に行われた。これには角山栄氏ら、ヨーロッパの専門家の援助をいたただいた。近年を成立させたヨーロッパと、それとは全く違った道をやって来た東南アジアが、どのような本質的な違いを持っているのかが論じられた。日本との比較では「地域間比較のあり方;東南アジアと日本をめぐって」として平成9年2月に行った。ここではネットワーキング型社会とでも呼べそうな東南アジアと日本型小中華世界とでも呼べそうな中心型の社会の違いが論じられた。いくつかの「地域研究」をやって来て、結論として得られたことは、東南アジアは熱帯多雨林多島海に広がるネットワーキング型の世界であるということである。
