项目摘要

本研究の中心概念である「変法」とは、19世紀東アジアの儒教世界において、国家の独立を保つために西洋の政治制度を導入して自国の政治制度を改革することをめざし、しかも導入しようとする制度は儒教の伝統の中にすでにそのモデルがある、とするものである。日本における代表的思想家横井小楠の場合は、書経に展開される三代の治・三代の学がそれに当り、中国の変法運動の指導者たる康有為の場合は礼記・礼運篤に展開される大同の社会がそれに当る。本研究では、横井小楠に関しては源了圓、熊本実学派に関しては花立三郎、小楠と幕府側との関わりに関してはM・W・スティール、康有為については坂出祥伸、が担当した。源は小楠の「三代の学」の基本概念である「思」と「格物」、「仁」と「誠」、「理」、「天」等の観念を検討、その結果、小楠は宋明学の基本概念を「三代」という観点から解釈し直す作業をし、そのことによって構成された理念としての儒教が「三代の学」であったことが明かになった。花立の研究では熊本実学派の人々の明治初期の熊本地方における藩政改革運動やその後の自由民権運動、殖産興業等における役割がかなり明かになった。とくに彼らの活動を通じて小楠の議会政治観が逆に明らかになったことは大きな収穫であった。スティールは勝海舟における幕府や藩を越えた「公」観念の形成を明かにし、それが一方では「海国国誌」「坤輿図識」に負いつつも、他方では儒教の「天下為公」の観念によることを示し、小楠との交友関係がこのような新しい公観念の形成に与るところがあったことを示唆した。坂出の研究は康有為の戊戌変法期に見られる日本の明治維新から明治23年に渉る変法の過程を、彼の上書やとくに『日本変政考』の分析を通じて明らかにしたものであり、日中両国の変法運動の具体的交渉過程の解明に資するところ大である。
