We applied different approaches including data collection and synthesis, in situ experiments, and dynamic model development to investigate what type of functional response is the most appropriate for describing microzooplankton grazing in plankton models. First, by compiling a pooled global dataset of dilution experiments, complemented by our own experiments, we demonstrated the difficulty of unequivocally demonstrating the right type of functional response for marine microzooplankton. Second, using Monte-Carlo parameter optimization techniques for three different plankton ecosystem models embedded within a 1D model, we found that Holling type 3 is the best option compared with type 1 and 2, although the problem of parameter unidentifiability becomes severe as the number of parameters increases. Third, we have applied the Holling type 3 functional response within a continuous size-based model coupled with a 3D ROMS model in the North Pacific, which shows good agreement with the observations including nitrate, chlorophyll, primary production, and size-fractionated chlorophyll. This plankton ecosystem model has several unique features including iron limitation, phytoplankton acclimation, and dynamic size structure.
