本研究の最終目標は、肝移植後の思春期のこどものセルフケア能力拡大のための看護実践ガイドラインの開発である。2021年度は、日本で小児肝移植を中核的に行う6施設の所属長らから推薦されたレシピエント移植コーディネーター兼看護師ら6名に対するインタビューデータの分析を進めた。その中で、本研究では、当初、思春期を対象にした看護実践を明らかにすることを目的にインタビュー調査を開始したが、大半の研究協力者（インタビュー調査対象者）らが思春期と若年成人に対する看護実践を繋げて語り、分析においても思春期と若年成人はきれず、分けるよりもまとめる方が良いと考えられたため、「肝移植後思春期若年成人（AYA）のセルフケア能力を高める看護実践」としてまとめることとした。また、分析の結果、オレムのセルフケア不足理論の中で示されている10 power componentsや、自己概念の確立、医療の主体を親からこども自身へと移行させることに関連するカテゴリー等、AYAに特徴的と考えられる内容を含む7つのカテゴリーを抽出できた。一方で、文献等から推察されるが抽出されなかったカテゴリーもあった。これら分析について、有識者らのコンサルテーションを受けた。また、今後は、研究協力者（インタビュー調査対象者）らによる分析結果に対するダブルチェッキングを受け、分析と考察を完了させ、インパクトファクターの高い雑誌への投稿や学会発表を行い、肝移植後AYAらへのケアや臓器移植医療の発展に寄与する知見の創出を行うという計画を立てるところまで行った。なお、申請者の米国留学のため、本研究課題は「海外における研究滞在等による科研費の研究中断・再開制度」により2022年4月より4年半予定で一時中断するが、留学中も研究を進め、インパクトファクターの高い雑誌への論文受理や学会発表を目指すことで関係者らと調整し、倫理委員会への変更申請も済ませた。
