重篤な身体的ストレスが加わると血中のT_3/T_4濃度の低下と、ホルモン活性のないrT_3濃度の上昇が同時におこるsick euthyroid syndromeあるいはlow T_3/T_4 syndromeと呼ばれる状態が生じ普遍的な侵襲反応と考えられるが、low T_3/T_4 Syndromeは短期的にはショック耐性を高めるという成績と逆に不利であるという相反する成績が出され結論が得られていない。侵襲時にはエネルギー基質の代謝が変化しタンパク崩壊が生ずるが、我々はlow T_3/T_4 syndromeがこの現象に何らかの関係があるのではないかと考え、そこで侵襲反応として普遍的な現象でありながらその意味がよく分かっていないlow T_3/T_4 syndromeについてエネルギー基質の代謝面からアプローチするのが研究目的で平成6年度の科学研究補助金をうけ、甲状腺全摘除による甲状腺ホルモンの急性低下(2日以内)ラットモデルを作成し、同時に盲腸結紮法による腹膜炎をおこした敗血症ラットによるlow T_3/T_4 syndromeの実験モデルを作成し、この両者の状態におけるエネルギー基質とくに脂質とアミノ酸の代謝についてそれぞれ如何に影響するのかを検討している。この第一段階において、甲状腺摘出ラットの作成に熟練を要し摘出手術中、手術直後の死亡例が多く確定的な成績は未だ得られていない。
