日本においては政治参加をはじめ、市民参加・社会運動等、様々な社会行動の停滞が指摘されており、その一因として日本人特有の「政治を嫌う意識（以下、政治忌避意識）」の存在が指摘されてきた。しかし、この政治忌避意識がどのような性質を持つ心理であるかについては十分な知見が蓄積されておらず、政治忌避意識を用いた研究の多くは「日本人特殊論」を十分に脱しているとは言えない。2022年度は、政治忌避意識の認知成分、すなわち、政治忌避意識は具体的に政治のいかなる側面に対して向けられているものなのかを検証した。具体的には、一般の有権者が政治のどのような部分を嫌っているかに関する自由解答データを収集し、これに対して計量テキスト分析を適用した。その結果、「高齢者中心」「空虚な論争と排他性」「私的利益の追求」「難解さと上辺の弱者支援」「閉鎖的な意思決定と柔軟性の欠如」という5つの認知成分が観察された。成果の最大の意義は、これまで漠然と「日本人は政治が嫌い」と語られてきた領域について、「具体的にどのような点が嫌いなのか」という知見を付け加えたことである。今後、国際比較などによって、政治忌避意識が真に「日本人固有の特質」と言えるかどうかが検証されなければならないが、日本人の政治忌避意識の認知成分が十分に解明されていなかったこれまでの状況では、そもそも有意義な比較が困難であった。2022年度に得られた成果は、他国との比較を可能にする第一歩として位置付けることができる。
