本研究では、ものづくりの能力構築・発揮の主体である「事業所(現場)」を分析の立脚点としつつ、日本国内と比較するために、日本企業の海外拠点、さらに米国・ヨーロッパ(ドイツ・イギリス中心)・韓国のものづくり企業に対して、ものと情報の流れ図による組織能力を測定し、日本企業の測定結果との比較分析を行う。詳細な下記のプロセスによって測定し、グローバルベンチマーキングを実施することである。具体的に、顧客が享受する価値を製品として仕上げていく「生産」活動に焦点を当てつつ、それらに深く関連する開発・販売・購買活動等を含む一連の価値創造活動(エンジニアリングチェーンとサプライチェーン活動)が実現されている「現場」における組織ルーチン(群)の実態を把握する。次に、ものづくり組織能力と組織成果との関係を示す。さらに、ものづくり組織能力の「活用」と「探索」を促進(阻害)する組織内プロセスを事業所(長)の戦略的行動に着目しつつ、本社、事業所、職場組織という3階層で多層的に解明する。その際には、組織能力の発揮・構築(ルーチンの変異・淘汰・保持)に作用する戦略要因と組織要因に注目していく。最後に、こうした要因が組織成果に与える影響を包括的に分析することにある。以上の研究計画を実施するために、研究1年目は、アメリカのUniversity of Pennsylvania、New York　University、Toledo Universityの研究グループと事前打ち合わせを実施し、調査企業の特定を行った。具体的な研究成果は、図書として１冊、研究論文と査読付き論文７本（そのうち、SSCI英文ジャーナル５本）を出版した。また、国際学会報告7回、国内学会報告２回を行った。
