Observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background show a smooth and simple early universe with a neutral gas component. This is in contrast to the local universe which is complex and inhomogeneous with ionized intergalactic gas. The study of the processes leading to this transformation during the first 5-10% of the universes age is one of the most important topics in modern cosmology. This Discovery Project will focus on a theoretical description of the key astrophysical processes in the early universe. The research will compliment and be guided by observations of this facinating era by the raft of new telescopes becoming available.
