本研究は、高齢者の社会階層の問題を扱う。特に、一般の成人男性などの調査対象研究ではできない、退職、加齢、それによる健康などの問題を中心に、これまで日本の社会階層論においてあまり触られなかった理論を検証することが目的である。本研究においては、まず、1996年8月に札幌において社会調査を行った。対象者は、札幌市白石区、厚別区、豊平区に在住する60歳以上の男性である。3つの区を母集団として、確率比例抽出行い、各区の選挙人名簿から全700名を抽出した。調査方法は留置法で、そして、調査の結果、65パーセントの有効回答を得た。これまで、健康や自己管理には教育という要因が非常に強く関連しているといわれてきた。今回の分析でも、教育の効果はもちろん、高齢者自身の自己身体への意識やその社会階層による要因、身体意識と社会階層の相互効果による健康を分析する。したがって、調査において用いた調査票における質問内容は、おもに、社会階層(教育、職業(歴)、階層・階級帰属意識)とライフスタイル、現在の健康状態とそれに関する意識、その他の意識項目などに中心に盛り込んだ。現時点での分析は、主にこれまでの先行研究をフォローし、本データの妥当性を確認するとことである。さらに、現在の健康と社会階層との関連、またそれらと年齢との関連のメカニズム、健康と退職の関連、退職前と退職後の階層帰属意識の差異の要因、自己管理意識(sence of control)と社会階層(特に教育)との関連など分析を行う。
