まず、古典論理学に関しては、研究代表者の論理的思考についての一連の実験的研究の一環として、すでに論理的思考過程を実験的に同定するコンピュータシステムが開発されている。このシステムでは思考課題としてコンピュータグラフィックスを用いた論理的問題解決事態(模擬的化学実験)を設定している。ただし、このシステムは心理学的実験を前提としており、教育用システムとして利用する為には種々の改良と再設計が必要である。またこのシステムは、古典的一階述語論理しか扱うことが出来ないという限界をもっている。類似のシステムとしては、J.BarwiseとJ.Etchemendyが開発したTarski's Worldとよばれる英語版古典論理学学習支援システムが存在する。しかし、このシステムもやはり古典的一階述語論理しか扱うことが出来ない。本研究では、これらの既存のシステムを土台として、それをさらに高次の論理を対象としたシステムに改良していくことを当面の目標とした。具体的には、、非単調述語論理を対象とする論理的思考の教育支援システムを設計した。ここでは、前記のグラフィックス課題での各操作毎に、課題状況自体が変化していくような課題設定(操作対象があらたに生成されたり消滅したりするような課題設定)を独自に開発した。さらに、非単調述語論理を対象とする論理的思考の教育を前提とし、このシステムと課題設定を用いて、様々な条件下で実験を行い、多くの興味深い結果を得た。
