本研究は、超高齢社会の多死時代に、お互い様の「互助」の活性化により地域包括ケアシステムの推進・深化するために、配偶者の死別体験をした遺族高齢者をケアの担い手として地域ケアを創造することである。方法は、参加型アクションリサーチで都市地域を研究フィールドとする。研究プロセスは、1年目は、遺族高齢者の看取り体験から「ケアの担い手」としての「互助」の可能性を見出すためのアセスメントを行うことであった。そのために、ケア提供者（実務者）に、配偶者の遺族体験をした遺族高齢者にどのような実践をしているかについて聞き取りをした。実務者は、遺族訪問をしているものの、遺族をケアの担い手としての実践はしていないことが明らかになった。また、配偶者の看取り体験が遺族高齢者自身に何をもたらしたかについて、遺族高齢者から聞き取った結果は、死別後の経過期間と介護期間によって異なることが示唆された。経過期間が短い（１年未満）では、面接に応じられない事例が複数いたが、3年以上経過すると、共に暮らした思い出をつらかったことも含めて語り、ひとり暮らしを楽しみながら、死の見方を発達させ自らの最期の準備を具体的に行い、人生の受容と死の受容に向かっていた。介護期間については、長ければ長いほど「できることはやった」というやり切った感を語っていた。したがって、遺族高齢者が他者の「ケアの担い手」になれる研究参加者は、見取り体験から3年以上経過し、配偶者の介護についてやり切った感を持つ者とする。見取り体験の語り内容は、研究者との信頼関係にも影響するので、方法を工夫する必要がある。
