クリティカルシンキングは「これからの社会を生き，より良い社会を作る」ために必要な能力であり，その獲得や教育による普及が求められている。しかし日本ではクリティカルシンキングに対して否定的な評価が連想されやすく，クリティカルシンキングの獲得が進んでいるとは言い難い。クリティカルシンキングの獲得を促進するためには，人々が魅力に思うような新しいクリティカルシンキングの有用性を示す研究成果が必要である。本申請課題は，クリティカルシンキング能力が高いほど，他者の心理状態を正確に推測できる（共感の正確さが高い）という採用者のこれまでの研究をもとに，クリティカルシンキングの社会的側面における有用性を明らかにすることが目的である。初年度は上記の研究目的を実行するため，以下の2つのことを行った。1つ目は，当該年度前に実施した，日常生活の中でクリティカルシンキングがもたらす影響に関する調査で得たデータの分析と分析結果に基づく成果の発表である。分析結果から，クリティカルシンキング能力はコミュニケーション・スキルや学校適応感につながることが示唆され，実際の社会生活においても有用となる可能性が示された。研究成果の発表は初年度の国内学会および国際学会で行った。2つ目は前述の当該年度前に実施した調査の直接的追試である。当該年度前の調査はサンプルサイズが不十分であり，さらに調査対象者が女性のみであった。これらを踏まえ，サンプルサイズおよび性別を拡大した直接的追試を目的とする調査を実施した。
