The project will focus on the time period between the 1890s and the 1930s and will investigate (1) the institutional framework of the emerging modern public sphere in China as a condition for the rise of the Chinese star, (2) the particular way in which Western and Chinese cultural norms interacted to create a new form of cultural play which fundamentally challenged the traditional standards dominating the social and value hierarchy, (3) the conscious interaction of the new media and the emerging stars in staging a scenario of public performance that was to have a profound impact on the parameters of modern urban public behaviour in China.
