项目摘要

3年間におよんだ本特定研究の当初目的は「各種各群の動物種における繁殖、捕食などの動物行動を適応戦略論的視点から、それぞれの生物種の社会構造と関連づけて把握し、生物社会の統一的な理解を得るための体系的な理論を構築する」ことであった。この3年間に、昆虫から魚類、鳥類、哺乳動物、霊長類(人類を含む)に至る各種各群の動物種についてそれぞれの研究者による研究者間の強力な協同研究体制のもとに、野外観察・調査、実験による数多くのデータの集積とそれに基づく理論的考察の枠組みを確立したことによって、ほぼその目的を達成したといえよう。昆虫における真社会性の進化、昆虫および甲殻類の交尾戦略・繁殖戦略の研究は、初年度から野外調査を主体にして進められてきたが、特に南西諸島での本格的な調査とともにいくつかの新しい事実の発見があり繁殖戦略・社会構造の理論の新しい発展を得た。脊推動物では魚類、鳥類、哺乳類を中心に調査研究が組織的に遂行され、交尾・育児・採餌行動と社会構造の詳細な比較検討が行なわれた。特に「なわばり」、「順位(リーダー制)」といった現象を側面にすえて、適応戦略論的視点を構築した。霊長類についてはニホンザルの調査を中心に推進されたが、特に新しい調査方法によって採餌戦略・繁殖戦略によるサル社会の分析がなされ、個体群維持機構に関する新しい事実が見い出された。ヒトに関する研究は旧来の伝統的風習や制度の残る沖縄や東北の僻地社会で重点的な調査が行なわれ貴重な資料が集収された。またそれに基づく社会構造と生存戦略の分析をとおしてヒト社会の特徴が抽出された。これらの広い研究対象で明らかにされてきた種々の動物行動の適応戦略的視点からみた統一的理論および社会構造形成のモデル理論の探求が個体群動態論と適応戦略論の融合した理論として世界に先がけて精力的に行なわれた。
