1.研究の目的地震および噴火に先行する地震群を広域でとらえ、前兆現象としての特性を把握することに重点を置きつつ、地殻応力場の状態を知る手法の確立と、群発地震活動の時間的変化を地域の特徴を踏まえつつ予測する方法を得ることを目的とした。2.研究の成果(1)地震波形の観測と解析 火山地域(例えば御岳山)において集中的な地震観測を実施し精密な波形記録を得た。また、群発活動の盛衰に伴なう波形の変化と活動パターンの変化を系統的に調べることによって群発活動の各段階における特徴を明らかにした。大量のデータによる解析を今後も継続することが必要である。(2)地震群の活動様式の研究 日本海中部地震などの大地震前数年間にわたって、震源域を取りまく広い地域で群発地震が次々と発生し、その発生は広域のテクトニクスを反映していることがわかった。また、巨大地震などが発生すると、日本列島規模の広い範囲で応力の再配分が行われ、地震活動の地域性に明瞭な変化が発生することがわかった。この変化は列島の活構造に深く関係している。大地震前の前震群のように応力レベルの高い所で起こる群発的活動はトリが一作用で発生する場合が多い。地殻応力場が臨界状態であることを知る一つの手がかりとなる現象である。(3)研究会の開催 統計数理研究所と協力して、地震前兆現象の定量的解析手法を確立することを目的とした研究会を開催し、当研究組織以外の各分野の研究者を含めた総合的討論が行われた。特に統計数理学の研究者との共同研究が今後必要である。
