今回の研究においてはカリフォルニア州107校のコミュニティ・カレッジに対するアンケートを試み、これに関して同州70のコミュニティ・カレッジ学校区に対する周知と協力依頼を行なった。これにより取得した資料およびその他計画により収集した資料により得られた成果(の一部)は次の通りである。2年制大学から4年制大学への編入(articulation,接続)教育の問題は、アメリカ、特にカリフォルニア州において現在、従来以上に重大化している。1985年秋現在で、カリフォルニア州のコミュニティ・カレッジからカリフォルニア州立大学およびカリフォルニア大学への進学者(編入学生)は個別的にみれば増加したカレッジもあるが全体的には依然減少の傾向にある。カリフォルニア州では編入の現状を大きく憂慮し、各カレッジに特別の資金を交付するなど種々の対策を講じている。しかしさらに根本的な再検討が要請されて、カリフォルニア州のコミュニティ・カレッジの在り方に対する審議会の最終的な答申が州議会に近々提出された模様であり、これにより「編入問題は大きな転機を迎えることが予想されている。4年制大学への編入は、その過程が時間的に長く、そしてその構造は極めて複雑である。総じて編入についてはコミュニティ・カレッジの方が熱心であり、4年制大学は消極的である。特にカリフォルニア大学の場合は、カリフォルニア州立大学のように統一的ではなく各分校が独自に行っており色々な問題がある。しかし近時、若年人口の減少期を迎えたためか4年制大学も真剣な取り組みを見せるようになったといわれる。本研究によりカリフォルニア州の編入問題は相当解明されたが、州制度としての「編入は追跡調査が必要である。
