佐賀藩の兵農分離制の研究に当ってまず史料調査から始めた。伊万里市役所,伊万里郷土資料館に藩制期と明治期の史料があり、佐賀藩の特質を検討する点では貴重なものである。整理を行い、分類しカード目録の作成を行った。整理した史料は約3000点に達した。その後、佐賀県内の史料調査に従事し、多久郷土資料館,武雄文化会館,北方町公民館の史料の検討を行い、それらをマイクロにとった。また諌早図書館、九州大学文化史研究所の史料についても調査した。これらの調査およびマイクロ化によって、兵農分離制に関する史料を多く集収できた。佐賀藩の特質として在郷士族の多さがあげられるが、それは村落構造の在り方を規制していた。村役人層に被官や足軽層が就任しているなどその一例である。この特質をより解明するために、唐津藩の調査を行った。唐津市立図書館,浜王町公民館,相知町立図書館の庄屋文書について検討した。村方には武士的身分者が余り介在しないこと、庄屋層が庄屋連帯を強めていることなどが判明した。これは藩制初期の兵農分離に帰因することは明らかである。そこで、佐賀藩の兵的身分者の存在をより解明するために、明治初年の士族問題について検討した。明治2,3年の藩制改革における様相、「佐賀の役」における士族層の動向について分析した。「佐賀の役」では中士層が中軸になっており、被官や足軽層と異なった存在であることが判明した。それは被官や足軽の位置づけにもかかわることである。このため、被官と足軽について塩田町役場史料を基に考察した。被官は上級給人との繋りが強くそれは軍事的側面よりも経済的な面での連繋であることが分った。足軽が重要な問題になるが、矢張り軍事力集団の基幹的構成であること、それゆえ、足軽が多数存在し藩軍事力を支えていた。これが在郷での兵的身分者の多さとなって現われていた。かくして、軍事力構成との関連での分析が重要となった。
