1.本研究では(1)下請中小企業の「自立化」に関する理論的研究に基づき、(2)主に東京都及び近接工業集積地域における機械金属系中小下請企業に対する聞取調査を行うことで、今日の産業再編成、下請再編成の下では生産・下請取引関係が通説にいわれる「自立化」の方向へと進展し、下請制が「支配・従属関係」を伴わない「社会的分業関係」へと発展しつつあるのか、という課題をめぐる検証を試みた。2.理論的には「技術革新」の進展によって、下請中小企業が取引先「親」企業への「従属」を離れて「自立」し得るだけの「技術力」、競争力を獲得するという「自立化論」をめぐって検討した結果、下請制の下では「技術革新」が下請中小企業の技術水準を向上させるにせよ、それは中小企業内部に階層的分化を引き起こしつつ、下請企業総体としてはより深く下請制に組み込まれる過程であり、またその前提として、下請制は中小企業の技術・生産力の発展と矛盾しない、むしろ下請制における剰余価値実現水準の低さが特別剰余価値取得を目的とする新鋭設備への更新を契機として「技術革新」をもたらす、という点を明らかにした。3.勿論、そうした理論仮説を本研究では(1)生産・労働過程、(2)労働内容、(3)下請取引での競争力、(4)下請関係、のそれぞれにおける聞取調査をもとに検証した。とりわけ、競争力、下請関係の双方では、そもそもME化の進展が「親」企業の下請単価引下げ要請を基本動因とし、また下請企業間の競争を直接の動因としていることを明らかにした。4.それ故、聞取調査からは「自立化」要件である(1)競争力の強化は「親」企業に対してではなく中小企業相互間において、また(2)取引先の分散化は競争力の強化を一義的に現わすのではなく、むしろコスト削減の必要条件である生産力拡大の結果として、また(3)「開発力」は単価引下げを吸収するコスト削減の必要手段として、それぞれ捉えられるべきであることが明らかにされた。
