本調査研究は, 現代アフリカにおいて進行する最も大きな社会変化である都市化と地域編成の実態を, 国民社会の形成, 都市社会の構造, 地域社会の形成と都市・村落関係の展開, 地域共同文化の機能, リングワ・フランカ(地域共通語)の機能などとの関連において, 長期間の継連的比較調査を行い, その収集された資料によって動態的に解明しようとするものである. この調査研究においては, 比較研究の視野を, 都市の形成条件の異なる東アフリカと西アフリカ, 植民地以前にアフリカ社会の自生的発展のなかで成立した伝統的都市(Aタイプ)と, 植民地体制下に発達した植民地都市(Bタイプ)という二つの側面をクロスさせることにおいている.本調査の主要な目的である, 長期間の参与調査による, アフリカにおける都市化諸現象についての, 第一次的資料を収集することに, 今年度の調査の主眼をおいた. すなわち, 長期計画の第一次調査として, , 個々の研究分担者が, 東・西アフリカの, Aタイプ(伝統型), Bタイプ(近代型)の諸類型のアフリカ都市を対象に選び, 各都市へのアプローチと, 都市形成史, 都市化にともなう地域社会の形成, 都市の社会構造, 地域共通文化と地域共通語の機能及び民族誌など, 多岐にわたる資料を収集し, 今後の共同研究進展の基礎を固めた.研究代表者日野は, 調査遂行の全体的総括に携ると共に, タンザニア国のスワヒリ都市ザンジバルにおいて, 伝統的都市が, 国民社会の発展のなかで, いかに変化していくかに焦点を絞って調査を行った. 研究分担者富川は, タンザニア国の近代都市アルーシャ地域における, 都市化が地域社会にもたらす文化変容について, 上田はケニア国のスワヒリ都市モンバサにおけるカンバ族社会を中心に他の諸部族との部族関係の展開と構造化に, 松田はケニア国の首都ナイロビにおけるマラゴリ族出稼ぎ民の社会適応の過程について, それぞれのフィールドワークを行った. さらに, 小倉はザンビア国の首都ルサカと鉱山都市ムフリアにおける出稼ぎ民の社会適応の過程を, 赤阪は西アフリカマリ国における市場形成と都市形成のかかわりについて, また松下はナイジェリア国ハウサ都市における言語使用の実態と方言の調査を行い, そしてエルドリッジはカメルーンにおけるフルベ王国の諸都市形成史についての口頭伝承の収集を行った. 赤阪が急性肝炎のため中途帰国を余儀なくされた他は, ほぼ予期どおりの成果を収めて, 本年度計画を終えることができた. 全体として, 日本では未開発なアフリカ都市研究についての生の一次資料をもちかえり, 今後の共同比較研究に資することが大であると考えている.
