本研究の目的はまず第一に, 米国各地に保存されている沖縄占領関係資料・文書を収集・分析すること. 第二には, 沖縄占領(1945ー72)に直接・間接に関与した人たちの証言を集めること, そして第三にはこれらの資料及び証言を通して占領の実態を総合的に明らかにし, それを日本本土占領研究の中に正当に位置づけることである.今回の調査・研究は, ワシントンを中心に, ボストン・ニューヨーク, プリンストン, スタンフォード, サンフランシスコ, ホノルルで行なった. 主な収穫を上げれば, ボストンではケネディ大統領記念図書館で1960年代初期の大統領特別補佐官カール・ケイセンを団長とする沖縄調査団による「ケイセン報告」, 及びロバート・ケネディ訪日関係資料を収集したこと, さらにライシャワー元駐日大使とインタビューができたこと等である. また, プリンストン大学では, 講和条約交渉当時の米国代表ダレス特使の関係資料を入手したほか, 米陸軍大学図書館では琉球列島米国民政府の元高等弁務官たちの沖縄統治に関する貴重な証言資料を部分的ながらコピーすることができた. ワシントンDCの米国立公文書館では, 対日講和条約関係文書並びに1950年代に米国務省と国防総省間においてなされた沖縄返還論議に関する資料を大量に入手できた. 加えてメリーランド大学図書館では, プランゲ・コレクションを閲覧, 米国立公文書館(スートランド分館)では, 日本占領時の米領事館及び独立後の米大使館文書の中から沖縄関係資料を集めることができた.スタンフォード大学図書館では, 元米駐日大使館公使で, 米国の対日外交政策に大きな影響を与えたとされるジョン・エマソン氏のコクレションの中から未公開の沖縄関係文書を入手することが出来た. その他, 沖縄占領初期の米軍政府政治担当のジェームズ・ワトキンズのコレクションで新たに解禁された資料をチェックするなどした.ホノルルでは, 現地で発刊されている邦字新聞から沖縄関係記事を一部収集すると共に, ハワイ大学図書館では主に「ホーレイ文庫」で沖縄関係文書のコピーをした. さらに沖縄戦直後にホノルルでなされた沖縄救援活動について数人の証言を得た.今回の調査を通してその重要性が分かったことの一つは, 米国の主要新聞・雑誌の沖縄関係記事の収集が不可欠だということである. 今後はこの面での資料収集をぜひ行ないたい. また, 米国立公文書館スートランド分館には大量の沖縄関係資料が未解禁のまま保存されているが, 政府レベルの交渉によって, せめて1950年代のものだけでも解禁してもらえば, 今後の沖縄占領研究に資するところが大きいので, その辺りの対策が必要となる点である. 次回の調査では, その面の対応策を考えたい.
