ブラジルは多人種・多民族からなる複合社会で, 民族的・地域的な文化伝統が強く残っている. また社会的・経済的格差が大きく, エリート文化と民衆文化の差異が顕著である. そうした背景のもとで, 本研究は, ブラジル諸地域における民衆文化の実態を調査し, その地域的個性の把握と相互の影響関係を明らかにすることを目的としている.中牧はロンドニア州ポルトベーリョにおいてインディオの宗教的伝統を中核にカトリシズムとスピリチャリズムの伝統が付加されたシンクレティックな教団の調査をおこなった. また北東部の伝統をつぐ民衆詩リテラトゥーラ・デ・コルデルの蒐集とインタビューをおこない, きたるべき第2次調査にそなえフェスタ・ジュニーナ(6月祭)と民衆劇ボイ・ブンバの情報収集につとめた. さらにロンドニア州では生長の家, サンパウロ州では本門仏立宗を中心に日系宗教のブラジル民衆文化への影響関係について調査した. 古谷はパラ州ベレンならびにアマゾナス州マナウスにおいて北部のアフロ・ブラジリアン・カルトの研究に従事した. とくに儀礼歌を多数収録し, その文字化の作業に着手した. さらに北部のカルトが南東部のそれと連続性をもちながらも, それとは独立した伝統を形成していることを明らかにするため, サンパウロ市とリオデジャネイロ市で比較調査を実施した. 荒井は北東部のレシフェでカーニバル, 民衆詩, 民衆劇に焦点をあてて研究をおこない, カーニバルでは黒人系民衆文化を強く残す団体を調査した. ブラジル側の研究分担者であるアメリコ・ペレグリーニ・フィリョとアルベルト・イケダはそれぞれミナス州とゴイアス州においてフォリアス・デ・レイス(三博士の祭)と民衆舞踊パストリニャを中心に調査を実施した. 研究者全員でサンパウロ州チエテのフェスタ・ド・ディヴィーノ(聖霊降臨の祭)の調査をし, イケダを除く全員でサンパウロ州サントス, プライア・グランデでイエマンジャーを中心とする年末年始の祭を調査した.
