1990年に横浜で開かれる第5回国際生態学会議をひかえ, これを成功裏に仕上げるため, 生態学の広い分野について調査検討し, 第4回大会の經過をも, ふまえて会議内容を学問的に検討した. さらに全体集会およびシンポジウムの大枠の構成ならびに個々のテーマについても検討を加えた. 第5回会議の事務局は横浜国立大環境科学研究センターに設置され, それに近い大学の協力態勢をととのえると共に, プログラムのまとめ役である日生態学会事務局の九州大学理学部および国際生態学会議との連絡をとりながらプログラムの充実を図った.分担課題1では準備会において日本国内の関係分野の検討を行ない, 関連諸学会へ宛てシンポジウム等への参加と組織上の協力を依頼した. また環境問題については生態学に関係深い分野を特に取〓選択した. 分担課題2ではシラキウスで1986年に行なわれた第4回会議の資料にもとずき, その意図と傾向を検討し, 我が国で大会を実施する際の特徴の出し方について討議し, あわせて国際本部との協力方法について検討を加えた. 分担課題3では以上の検討をふまえ, 第5回横浜大会の基本的性格を決定し, これを第1回目のサーキュラーとして昭和62年8月に印刷し, 世界中の生態学会に配布した. その中には大会のテーマ, シンポジウムの大枠として, 1)生態学的原理の統一的展望, 2)人間活動に基ずく地球的規模の気候と生態系の変化, 3)アジア地域の生態学の3つを決定して盛り込んだ. さらに海外を含め広くシンポジウムの企画を公募し, 集まった提案に関して討議し, 内容の検討, 調整, 世話人等の決定を行なった. なお, これを最終的に整理したものは, 本年8月を目標として, 第2回目のサーキュラーのアカデミックな部分の内容として出版する予定である.
