マックス・ウェーバーの宗教と社会倫理を巡る壮大な比較文化史的研究の実質上の意義を、宗教的営為や社会倫理の意味と可能性を問う、倫理学がもつ現実学としての研究領域の方法論の確立という観点から再検討・吟味し、その画定を図る本研究の基礎的段階を、まず、濱井修が担当した。濱井は、ウェーバー以前の西欧の社会思想とウェーバーの思想との比較対照を経て、重点的には、ウェーバー以降の西欧の社会思想(主に、H・アルバート、K.ポパー、A・シェッツおよびフランクフルト学派)におけるウェーバー思想の影響・受容・批判の確認を通して、社会文化世界内の対象・営為の総体=「意味の世界」の「説明」と「理解」の統一的地平を展望して、他の二人の研究のための前提を設えた。濱井の成果を承けるかたちで、関根清三は、ウェーバーの主論文の一つである「古代ユダヤ教」を文献内在的に読解しながら、新約聖書の福音書研究に用いられてきた編集史的方法を旧約予言書に適用して、本文批判・文学批判・伝承史・様式史等を踏まえた編集史的考察を加え、さらにこの編集史的仮説の意味論的な検討を通して、従来の旧約聖書学を発展させ-具体的には、「第三イザヤ書」の作者問題に「作者複数説」の提唱によって決着をつけ、研究史上のアポリアを克服するとともに、ヤハヴェ宗教と他宗教との歴史的・教義的関係を確定した-、宗教思想、宗教倫理の象面での先の現実学の方法論的土台の構築を図った。森岡正博は、社会倫理の現代社会的な意味を問う作業の一環として、バイオエシックスの論争に着目し、ウェーバーの社会分析、人間論を踏まえつつ、いわゆる「パーソン論」(トゥーリー、プチェッティ、エンゲルハート等)の展開-人工妊娠中絶、安楽死、脳死、臓器移植問題を巡る議論-を批判的に検討して、その限界を画定し、これを乗り越え、新たな現実的倫理学として「生命学」を提唱した。
