上越市中ノ俣および能生谷等中ノ俣の近隣集落の民家・集落と生活慣習について, 以下の如き調査および検討を行った.1.民家の調査と建設年代等の考察-中ノ俣の民家の補充調査および近隣集落である能生谷の高倉・中野口等の民家の調査を行った. その結果, 能生谷には安永7年(1778)より明治期に至る茅葺民家が残っており, その平面形式は中ノ俣の民家と類似の平面形式で, この形式の民家が上越市・西頸城郡一帯に分布していることが判明した. 能生谷の民家は, 細部手法においては年代的変化はあるものの, 平面形式は各年代を通じてほぼ同一であること等も判明した.2.民家の普請に関する文献史料の収集-中ノ俣の普請状況と比較するため, 能生谷において「家作諸職人勤帳」等普請関係の史料37点を収集し, 分析した. その中には中野口の現存する天保3年(1832)建設の小杉家主屋普請に関するものが3冊あり, 現存民家の建設の様相が明らかになる. また当家の嘉永2〜3年の蔵の普請に関する帳簿もあり, 附属屋の建設の様相も判明した.3.家替の史的調査-家を互いに交換する慣習(家替)が中ノ俣にあることはすでに判明していたが, 高倉では交換するわけではないものの中古の家を屋敷・屋敷林ごと買って移り住む例を5例確認した. この移転を「えがえ」と呼んでいる場合もあり, 「えがえ」の慣習のなごりではないかとも考えられる. この点については, 今後も幅広く聞取り調査を継続する必要があると考えている.以上のほかに能生谷集落の明治初期の建物台帳も収集することができた. 建物台帳と現存民家との比較・検討も可能であり, これらの点については今後とも継続調査する予定である.
