激動する世界の諸状勢のなかで、日本のおかれている位置をただしく把握し、世界の諸地域についての深い認識を確保する必要がある。各地域についての認識を深化させるため、基礎的な地域研究の着実なつみかさねが不可欠となる。わが国における地域研究の推進の方策についての体系的なとりくみはこれまでほとんどなされていない。本共同研究会のこころみが、はじめてのものといえるだろう。研究会の討議を通じて、いくつかの問題点があきらかになってきた。これらの問題点のなかで、主要な二点を指摘しておこう。第一点は、方法論の問題であろう。地域研究の方法は、その地域の具体的・個別的な条件に応じて多様な形を取らざるをえない。各地域ごとに有効な方法論を検討してゆく必要がある。たとえば、中東地域においては、歴史ー現在と自然ー社会の両軸を視野においた研究方法の有効性が認識された。同時に、この方法論がすべての地域で有効性をもつものではないこともあきらかになっている。第二点は、組織論の問題である。基礎研究としての地域研究を最も効率的な形で推進してゆくには、大規模な情報集積の持続性と高密化をはからなければならない。地域研究の成果をみのりゆたかなものにするためには、それを十全な形で保証する装置としての組織を必要とする。緊急にあたらしい地域研究体制の確立をはからなければならない。地域研究の推進の方策については、今後さらにふかい検討をくわえてゆく必要があるだろう。
