中国の風景を描いた唐土勝景図巻(揚子江図巻や唐土勝景画稿も同一原本による模本として含める)は、一応雪舟の描いた原本をもとにした模本と考えられてきた。ただ一部に雪舟の弟子秋月の筆によるとの伝えを持つものもあった。しかし、図巻中に書き込まれた書には雪舟の書の特色が現れていること、雪舟とともに入明した呆夫良心の天開図画楼記に雪舟が中国の風景や風俗を積極的に写生したと記されていること、古くから雪舟の帰路真景図や入唐図の存在が知られていたことなどを考え合せると、この図巻はやはり雪舟筆の原本の存在を前提とした模本であるとすることができる。雪舟は入明し寧波から北京まで旅したが、描かれているのは揚子江から寧波までの間の風景であり、金山寺、焦山寺、宝帯橋などがかなり正確に描かれており真景図として間違いない。そうとすればこの図巻は、雪舟真景図の内で最も早い時期に描かれたものの模本であると考えることができる。この図巻により2つのことを知ることができる。1つは図巻形式による真景図を描いたこと、一視点の移動を図巻形式により処理したこと、1つは部分部分まで正確に描くのではなく象徴的な描き方もしていることである。この2点は掛幅装の天橋立図を考える上で重要な視点を提供する。あの不思議な構成は視点の移動を掛幅装の上に実現したものであること、描かれたものは必ずしも正確には描かれておらずそれらから制作年代を考えることは慎重にすべきことを考えるべきである。この2点は富士清見寺図を考える上でも考慮すべきことである。視点の移動を画面の上でうまく処理する雪舟技法は、真景図以外の山水図ー毛利家本四季山水図や大原家本山水図にも何らかの形で姿を現しており、雪舟画法にとって重要な意味を持つが、その嚆天を唐土勝景図巻に見ることができる。
